Stock shielded patch cables are built for server racks. They come in set lengths and colors, with a PVC jacket and a snagless boot. That works in a data closet. It often doesn’t work inside a machine, on a robot arm, or in a medical cart. Technical Cable Applications (TCA) builds custom shielded patch cables to your spec at our facility in Auburn, Washington, with added nearshore capacity at two partner facilities in Guadalajara, Mexico. You choose the category, shield type, connectors, jacket, length, and color, and we build it.

Shielded Patch Cable Options
Category:
- Cat5e for 1 Gbps links and legacy equipment
- Cat6 for 1 Gbps with extra headroom, and 10 Gbps over short runs
- Cat6A for 10GBASE-T over the full 100 m channel
Shield construction:
- F/UTP (FTP): an overall foil shield around four unshielded twisted pairs. It provides solid EMI protection in a thinner, more flexible cable.
- S/FTP: an overall braid plus individual foil on each pair. It offers the highest noise immunity and is the usual choice for industrial shielded Cat6A.
Connectors:
- Shielded RJ45 plugs with metal shells that bond the cable shield to the connector all the way around
- M12 D-coded (4-pin, 100 Mbps) for industrial Ethernet on sensors, I/O, and field devices
- M12 X-coded (8-pin, up to 10 Gbps) for high-speed links in harsh environments
- Hybrid cords, such as M12 to RJ45, for connecting field devices to cabinet switches. More on our M12 cable page.
Lengths, colors, and labels: exact lengths instead of the nearest stock size, jacket colors to identify networks or systems, and printed labels or heat-shrink markers.
Jackets:
- PVC for general indoor use
- PUR for oil, coolant, abrasion, and continuous flexing
- LSZH for enclosed spaces, transit, and facilities that require low smoke and halogen-free materials
Flex-rated cable: high-flex stranded constructions rated for drag chains and robot dress packs, where standard patch cord cable fails early.
Overmolded boots: we overmold connectors in-house for strain relief, latch protection, and a sealed transition that holds up to vibration and handling.
When to Use Shielded Patch Cables
Unshielded twisted pair relies on pair twist alone to reject noise. In an office, that’s usually enough. Choose a shielded Ethernet patch cable when:
- The cable runs near motors, VFDs, or servo drives. Switching noise from drives can cause packet errors, retries, and dropped connections.
- You’re on a factory floor. Welders, contactors, and high-current power runs in the same cable tray all add interference.
- You’re building medical equipment. Dense electronics and imaging systems call for cables that keep noise out and emissions in.
- You’re running 10G. Cat6A is sensitive to alien crosstalk between neighboring cables, and a shielded STP/FTP patch cable controls it.
A shield only works when it’s terminated correctly. It has to run continuously from end to end and bond to the connector shell. A shield that stops short of the plug, or one connected to equipment that isn’t grounded, adds very little. Our article on when industrial-grade Ethernet cables are necessary covers this in more detail.
Applications
- Industrial automation: PLCs, HMIs, managed switches, and EtherNet/IP or PROFINET networks inside control cabinets and out on the machine
- Robotics: robot controllers, vision cameras, and end-of-arm devices, where PUR S/FTP high-flex cable has to survive millions of cycles
- Medical devices: imaging systems, patient monitoring carts, and lab analyzers, often with LSZH jackets and color-coded cords
- Test and measurement: automated test equipment, data acquisition systems, and test fixtures, where noise can skew results and every cable needs to match
Why OEMs Source Shielded Patch Cords From TCA
Certified quality. TCA is ISO 9001:2015 certified and holds UL wiring harness certification. Our technicians are IPC certified, and assemblies are built to IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship standards.
In-house overmolding. We mold boots and strain reliefs in our own facility, so tooling, fit, and quality stay under our control.
Fast prototypes. Need a few custom shielded patch cords to validate a design? We turn around first articles quickly so you can test fit and performance before committing to production.
Twisted pair experience. As a twisted pair cable manufacturer, we know how pair geometry, shield termination, and connector choice affect real-world performance.
US-based, with nearshore manufacturing. Work directly with our team in Auburn, WA, with production support from our partner facilities in Guadalajara. You get competitive pricing and shorter shipping times than overseas suppliers.
Flexible quantities. We build one-off prototypes, low-volume runs, and recurring production orders.
